I know. I liked him initially, but I gradually came to get a bit tired of him.

I just don't find anything likeable about the character. He's shallow and he's sleazy, and he's deeply unpleasant, and I find the only times I can tolerate him (and John Barrowman's exceptionally awful acting) is when the scripts are written with the intent that's he's shallow, sleazy and a bit monstrous.

This is part of why Torchwood 3 worked so well for me. He's not actually a character people should be liking. If they had written him properly the whole time, he'd be the Avon of the 21st century by now.

Who am I kidding. We all know Gene Hunt's the Kerr Avon of the 21st century.

I didn't mind him in those first few eps. He wasn't meant to be likeable initially, he was meant to be a bit of a rogue, and I felt it mostly worked. But then Russell started being the one writing for him in the show, and that started to get lost behind the root-anything attitude.

And Torchwood certainly did him no favours. It says a lot that the moment he went from Torchwood to Doctor Who, I found him to be a lot more likeable, even with the gradually sickening way he came on to everyone.

And no, Gene Hunt is the Doctor for the 21st century. "I never kill unless me own life is threatened... doesn't mean I won't kneecap ya though."

[GregT] I like Doctor Who Jack, I hate Torchwood Jack. Doctor Who Jack got a really nice send-off when they revealed him as you-know-who, and wrapped his story up quite nicely and finally - which made it twice as irritating to bring him back into Who (along with Rose, who'd also had a perfectly good finale) for that misguided Dalek rubbish.
