Kiss my ring! [May. 5th, 2009|08:54 pm]

I have just discovered that, apparently, there are those that have referred to me as "the Confather"...

On an evening where I feel like a delicate flower, this does not so much comfort me as leave me feeling rather bemused.

Still, could be worse, they could be calling me a SMOF. I find that so uncomfortable a term (when used in relation to me) that it borders on offensive. Confather has an air of gentle mockery which I am far more comfortable with.

And I like the idea of having a personal mafia. I could get them all working for me on Continuum Foundation projects...

I'm sorry, you're not cleared for that.

It stands for Secret Master of Fandom. As you can imagine, 99% of the people who take the idea as something to aspire to, or think of themselves as such, are actually ammoral wankers who want power.

That said, I know two people who actually do the hard work, and have never struck me like most of the rest. Alan Stewart, who used to do a phenomenal amount of stuff very quietly in the background, and smofbabe who, despite her LJ name, has always struck me as giving wholeheartedly of herself to fandom, rather than taking from it to build a personal power-base.

It's the general rule of thumb though, isn't it? If someone gets described as a SMOF, then clearly they're not. They might be a bit of a public MOF, or PMOF, but generally overly excessive PMOFs just get laughed at, argued with or ignored.

The problem exists within the sort of people who aspire to SMOFdom. And not all the public ones are harmless, some are quite willing to do major damage to people, clubs, and events in the pursuit of their power base.
