Waiting... [Aug. 13th, 2008|04:51 pm]

[mood |sleepysleepy]

Sharon's due Saturday.

Given what happened with Tracy, and Lex's attempted early appearance 10 weeks ago, we really thought we'd probably be parents by now. We've been waiting for it to happen ever since she finished work. We're sort of hitting the doesn't-quite-seem-real bit now, wondering if the baby's going to actually appear or if it'll have all turned out to be some weird mistake and Sharon just happens to have had a lively case of gas.

Oh, we know the bub could easily be a couple of weeks overdue yet, but we're now sitting in the outer limits of the dead-end zone... waiting...

That said, we are both now members of Parent Club. You don't need to have a child yet, you just need to be far enough along so that it seems inevitable. I won't mention the first two rules of Parent Club (so I have plausible deniability), but the third rule is -

3. You can, at any time, strike up a light-hearted conversation with any other parent.

The third rule comes naturally. You see parents dealing with their kid, and you're allowed to say something to them. And if you mention that yours is still on the way, they give gentle encouragement, tell you it's wonderful and that you'll have a great time, then exchange knowing smiles as they communicate telepathically with one another and say, "He has no idea what he's in for..."

you do realise, that once Lex is born, that there will be pressure from all sides to start training in competitive parenting? Especially with the Olympics on at present - the stakes have never been higher for being able to out anecdote the opposition. You too could boast for your country!

I'm not sure I'll be up to the task, but the kid's going to learn his comic timing right from the get-go.

And pratfalls, though that may take me laying tripwires all over the house.

Trust me. They fall over all by them selves. No need for tripwires...

Danny, I don't think it ever seems real. I remember finishing work and going on maternity leave and sitting at home waiting until that day Jess finally came along.
Sorry this may or may not bring up bad memories of that day, but even after the birth it was truly bizare, amazing and utterly wonderful.
I wish you all the best to you and especially Sharon, we will be thinking of you and cannot wait until it happens.

love Carol

I found it hard to believe I was going to have a baby when I was pregnant, and I sometimes still can't believe I actually have a child :)

Box of stuff for Lex being posted today hopefully...

Good luck!

We were thinking of you guys last week, cut off from the world in our secluded cottage, wondering if there was news yet...

And still no news... If he arrives after tomorrow, it means he's now late, and therefore takes after Sharon :D

Still not quite caught up on LJ, but went and had a look. You went to Eden! How cool! It's a lovely place, and yes, the story of Old Tom is interesting and odd. Sounds like you both had a wonderful time :D

One year down, a lifetime to go!

Clearly, it's like waiting for the kettle to boil. All you have to do is forget you're about to have a child, and things will commence! Easy!

Hope the wait doesn't send either of you too batty:)
