Top Gear [Jan. 28th, 2008|10:10 pm]

[mood |excitedexcited]

For all those people who have yet to watch Top Gear because they "don't like car shows" or they "aren't into cars", be watching next Monday night at 7:30.

The challenge to Richard Hammond and James May in next week's episode is to turn a car into a re-useable shuttle craft. They know the car will never fly, but they get people from the British Rocketry Association to figure out how to launch it.

Trust me, it is a fabulously insane and inspired bit of TV, and the clearest example of why Top Gear is anything but a car show.

Ooh, I've seen the rocket one and it's fantastic. Finally saw the US special tonight which I've been hearing about for ages and it was one of the best ones yet. :)
Even my dad is hooked (which means I've got birthdays and Fathers' Day sorted for as long as they keep releasing DVDs.)

Even though I had heard about the US special and knew what was coming I was not prepared for how scary it was! Now that's reality television.

Wasn't it amazing? I'm sure the producers and presenters thought it was all going to be a big joke with the "write things on each other's car that will get your co-presenters arrested or shot," challenge, until the first place they stop it turns nasty enough that they have to do a runner.

I'm not sure if it was this episode or another from the US that has out-takes where one of the crew can be heard saying 'That was a gunshot! I think we're being shot at!' They took it out of the aired episode because the reactions were already so extreme, they didn't think the audience would believe it was real.

And the condition of New Orleans! It looked like it had been hit by the hurricane two weeks earlier not twelve months earlier.

The best one I recall is when they chased a sports car over a salt flat and hit it with 50 calibre machine gun fire from a helicopter - just because they didn't like the make and model of car.

Also, when they converted a people mover to a convertible and set fire to a car wash merely by driving the vehicle through it.

My favorite episode was when they had to get a car for dirt cheap and then at the end they had to test safety by running into a brick wall with their car. No test drivers. No dummies. No remote controll cars. Just get in, drive it into a wall, and if you're hurt the car fails.

(off-topic as I don't have your email address)
These pics remind me of your telegraph-in-the-sand-dune photos from a few months back.

Unfortunately I missed that Top Gear ep. Sounds fun.
