Whose son is he? [Jul. 10th, 2009|07:15 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | tired]

Conversation with Sharon a while ago

Me - Your son has been a right little horror all day!

Sharon - My son? And when does he get to be your son?

Me - When he sets fire to something or gets arrested for public indecency.

-Beat-

Sharon - That sounds fair.

11 years [Jul. 5th, 2009|06:43 pm]

Today is Shaz and my 11th Wedding Anniversary. Surviving the eleven years isn't the achievement, it's surviving the last ten months with Lex!

We had a nice day at the National Film and Sound Archives, 'cos we're geeks. And before anyone says anything, it was Sharon's idea!

[mood |depressed]

I've had an interesting few weeks, in the good way. My headaches stopped about a week/week-and-a-half ago, and I've gotten a lot done in that time.

Amongst other things, I made space in the library for Sharon's desk and computer, and moved it all so that we now no longer have a computer room but Lex has a bedroom. Lex also now claps when he hears the word 'clap,' and he seems to be enjoying swimming.

Working with the wonderful arcadiagt5, we've gotten the Chronos Awards sorted, and will be announcing the nominees as soon as we've gotten a couple of small details confirmed. And the awards are being designed and made by two fabulously talented folks in the special effects/model-making field, so they should be nice.

I've fixed the ceiling fan in the bathroom, been visited by some good friends, and sent out surprise presents to a small handful of others. Plus, I'm doing some fun panels at the upcoming Continuum 5, and I was able to justify the purchase of the original Night Stalker series, and seasons 1 & 2 of Supernatural for a panel I have planned for C6! These fall outside my yearly budget of $100 for DVDs, because I basically need them for research, so huge bonus (paid for out of shop profits, rather than household budget)!

So, why did I wake up so dreadfully depressed this morning? Read more... )

"No, don't put your foot there. No, Lex, don't put it there. No seriously. Ow!"

"No, Lex, don't pull dad's hair. Ow! No, don't do it... That's it, play with dad's collar... Ow! ...and head butt dad in the face too, that might be fun, eh?"

That was just the last ten minutes.

Nice! [May. 25th, 2009|09:12 am]

Because we don't often notice the absence of something, I'd just like to say that I am fully aware and appreciative of the fact that today I woke up without the merest hint of a headache, let alone screaming pain, for the first time in weeks.

Doubly impressive since Lex kept us both up into the wee hours. And at this point I think I've had about four hours sleep.

It may not last, but for the moment... *big happy sigh*

(EDIT) - Actually there was one other day where I woke without pain, but I still had a sensation of pressure. Today doesn't even have that!

Just finished a loaf of gluten free bread for Sharon, and have pre-prepared most of the mix so that in the morning I can make her and mum gluten free pancakes.

I'm feeling quite happy about this :)

Bed now.

My Little Bull Terrier [Apr. 18th, 2009|01:20 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[mood | impressed]

Bull terriers have an interesting quirk - they can bite down so hard that nothing will make them let go until they want to. Some people mistake this for them 'locking' their jaws, when in fact it's just sheer bloody-mindedness on the part of the animal. No matter how much damage is done to them, they won't let go until they are done, unconscious, or dead.

I once saw our 13 year old, half-blind bull terrier, Pancho, get into a fight with three other younger, bigger dogs that weren't on leads and ran as a pack. Dad tried to intervene, he always did if Pancho was involved in a fight, but after having the owner of the three dogs make no effort to stop them, and make a smiling comment along the lines of 'Sorry mate! Dogs, eh? Whatcha gunna do?' Dad decided to let Pancho do his thing. Dad wasn't trying to protect our dog. Pancho tore them to shreds, much to the dismay of the owner.

Sharon is a bit like a bull terrier At the moment she's pissed off at someone who is wrong on the internet, and is formulating her reply. I was going to reply to them myself, but [info]shazgirl is going to do a much more thorough job than I, who would have been relying on memory and, too be blunt, can't be bothered arguing the point that much. They are making sweeping statements about events they weren't around to witness.

Normally Sharon wouldn't bother to reply either, but this one has annoyed her. She knows the statement made is wrong, and now she's doing the research to prove just how totally wrong it is. Today is the second day of her research. I would have gone into this with a figurative punch on the nose, Sharon will be going in with a chainsaw in each hand.

Love you, sweetheart! And I've never wanted you more!

[mood | cheerful]

You can always tell when I'm busy, I don't get around to posting or reading LJ, but I had to take time out to share this.

You know it's a good start to the day when you wake from a dream in which you meet and talk to Deep Roy. And if I hadn't woken up, I have no doubt he would have been up for signing some stuff. Mondy was there too. He was the first to speak to Deep.

Anyway, His Majesty is calling for attention (Lex, not Mondy), so must be off.

[mood | annoyed]

I've been home since this arvo, and this evening I noticed something crawling on me.

I took it outside.

Then I noticed another a short time later.

I took that outside.

The fifth one I got rid of with a puff of air.

That was a while ago. Now I'm swiping and potentially maiming and killing them.

I am sick of having small spiders running all over me.

Again!

* I made banana and walnut muffins today, and they were yummy. I gave half to Bill and Diane from the Post Office, because they are lovely people and I didn't manage a Chrissy prezzie for them last year.

* Our estate agent has put back our rent inspection a month at my request. Basically told her we were in the middle of sorting/rearranging, and the house would be a mess.

Cut for extreme length, and because there's nothing overly exciting... )

Missed out! [Feb. 7th, 2009|12:43 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

Got outbid at the auction, but that's okay. There were only three of us bidding and it quickly came down to a young couple and a pair of builders. The couple got it for $395K in the end.

Glad the owners got a good price. And we're both really hopeful that the couple realise that they'll be spending a fair bit on curtains, and that without doing a major amount of work on insulation, their winter bills will be ecksy. Would hate for them to get it and then struggle with the extra expenses.

Apparently, builders are doing really well at the moment. Many are buying houses like this one that need a little work, and of course they can fix them up cheap. So they are getting better houses in better areas. It'll be interesting to see how some neighbourhoods change over the next few years.

We're not really disappointed. It was a potential opportunity but we figured we'd miss out on it. That said, we learned a lot of handy things, so we're better prepared for future sales and auctions. Probably the handiest idea is that any house we're even curious about, email the agents and ask for a property report before we even think of going to look at it. In Canberra, the owners get the property report done, and whoever buys the property then reimburses them.

So the roperty reports will cost us nothing and let us know what needs to be done up front, so we can take it into account when viewing the property. Plus they all come with plans, which are really handy. So that should save some running around.

At least now we don't have to worry about settlement/moving happening around Swancon!

[mood | exhausted]

It's been an absolutely mad week. Last weekend, there we were just plodding along, looking idly at a couple of houses, no intention of buying before the middle of the year, tomorrow we're going to the auction for a place with the intention of bidding.

Between Lex having his injections and needing lots of cuddles for two days, a big eBay mail-out (I only got 3 hours sleep last night because I was packing), and running around organising pre-approval, and tonnes of other related stuff - well, I haven't read any LJ, and I owe a few people emails. More on the house below the cut... )

Random Dot Points [Jan. 28th, 2009|08:42 pm]

[mood | exhausted]

- Lex is simply not bothered by the heat to any noticeable degree. We haven't got air-conditioning in the car or house, and he seems fairly unfussed. Which is good, because I think people rely on aircon too much, and then are unable to cope without it.

- Lex also seems totally unphased by the pair of teeth working their way up through his gum. He's marginally more needy in that he wants more hugs, but is often quite happy to be left while we get on with Stuff(TM).

- Still struggling like a big wuss. Haven't crashed in the same way I normally do, but it's still draining.

- Back to swimming lessons tonight. Was good, but exhausting.

- Have you ever considered the great debt we owe panelists who actually care enough to do research for their panels? In preparation for the Doctor Who panel at this year's Swancon, today I watched episode 3 of Time and the Rani... I would rather be at the dentist having my four wisdom teeth pulled out.

- I still have to organise going to the dentist to have my wisdom teeth removed.

- Sharon is still beautiful.

- I would really like to be in a condition to go to the Post Office Friday to mail off some things, since I will have the car then. Time will tell.

- Last night I felt like crap and really wanted to watch something, so I picked Escape from New York. It was the first time I had seen it in around twenty years, and is still an enjoyable watch. It's funny how absolutely everyone seems to know Snake Plissken.

[music |Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud - David Bowie]

I had plans for today that have had to be abandoned due to the clutch dying on my car last night on the way back from the Comic Book Opera. Today's plans involved car trips.

Mind you, given I'm feeling absolutely wrecked today (I was feeling pretty buggered yesterday too), having a good reason not to be able to go ahead with those plans is something of a blessing.

Instead however, I'm now attempting to clean out the library, albeit in five minute chunks broken up by half hour breaks.

Sometimes when your main task has been derailed, you just need to pick a harder one to replace it.
