Priorities... [Dec. 13th, 2009|12:45 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , ]
[mood | contemplative]

One of the things I've become conscious of in recent months is my priorities. They haven't changed, I'm just aware of them now.

While my health and fitness has improved slowly but steadily since the stroke, I still have a fairly limited amount of spoons, and even when I'm doing well, it doesn't take much to steal them all if I'm not careful. I've been tending to beat myself up a bit for not getting things done, but then recently I realised how it is I work my limited resources. Read more... )

Requests [Dec. 12th, 2009|08:57 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | creative]

Can you tell I was woken at stupid o'clock and haven't been able to get back to sleep?

Anyway, I have two requests.

1. Can anyone point me towards something I can embed in LJ that will play audio files when people click on it? Basically I'd like to be able to put up some select soundgrabs and such. So far my searches for something that would be quick and easy and free have amounted to nothing, but I'm not necessarily terribly awake or with it.

2. I'm looking for a Canberra (or nearby) based geek girl, preferably with a nice pair of geek girl glasses, for a photoshoot idea. Costume would ideally be fur bikini ala Raquel Welch in One Million B.C.. Is this you, or a friend? Contact me for details. No money, but a full set of photos from the shoot would be provided.

Would also be happy with the right looking geek boy, though he wouldn't be in a bikini, of course.

* Sharon and I got to go see Up on Sunday. It was good and didn't stupidly pander to the 3D. Yay!

* Sharon's grandpa died Sunday night. He was an awesome old bloke. Boo!

Question Meme (revisited) [Sep. 12th, 2009|12:25 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[mood | tired]

Life is stupidly tiring and busy at the mo'. Lex is refusing to sleep, which woldn't be so bad but he insists we don't sleep either. So here is a mostly pre-written post I've been meaning to get up for ages.

Way back in January I did the Interview Meme. As it stood, I still had a bunch of questions to answer, I answered most of them at the time but babalon_93 hit me with five questions that required detailed answers, two of which were stumpers. And it's taken me until now to finally answer the two I found most difficult. All the rest were answered way back in early Feb. I haven't made any changes to my old answers to update them.

So, below the cut, my answers to questions posed by [info]stephiepenguin, [info]arcadiagt5, and [info]babalon_93. If you posed questions for me that I haven't answered here, feel free to repose them and I shall attempt to answer them sometime in the next eight months. Very long... )

Long Term Planning and Willing Souls [Aug. 7th, 2009|01:32 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]
[mood | thankful]

The mid to late nineties was when I first had the base idea for the Continuum Conventions. I still have most of my notes from then, filed away where I can one day come across them and say, "So that's where they were!"

I've never thought as myself as a good person for running cons, or something like the Continuum Foundation for that matter. Read more... )

Smaller World [Jul. 27th, 2009|05:44 pm]

[mood | sad]

Just got back from wandering the Giralang shops with my better camera (but no tripod). Pictures will be up when I find time.

On the way back I walked past the soccer field and there were a bunch of kids playing and being coached. The field was lovely, the kids seemed to be having fun, and in the distance between the trees, the Telstra tower was lit orange by the setting sun. It would have been a gorgeous photo.

Five years ago.

But of course, in this day and age, I couldn't afford to take it. Read more... )

Readdressing the Balance [Jun. 4th, 2009|07:00 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood |quixotic]

So, after my post on how Media and Lit Natcons were joined, and how media fandom as a whole got thoroughly screwed, general consensus was that the whole situation sucked.

So what are we going to do about it? )

A Tale of Two Natcons [Jun. 1st, 2009|09:07 am]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | thoughtful]

In the early 90's the media Natcon was going gangbusters (300-400+ attendees), the lit Natcon was dying with a slowly decreasing (around 200) and aging membership. With the success of a couple of joint media/lit Natcons, it was suggested that Australia's population was so small the two cons should be joined.

It would mean a bigger overall Natcon with a larger budget. Everyone would win. The media fans had no reason to do this. Their Natcon was doing fine. The only reason they did it was out of a sense of community. It would be good for fandom as a whole to have a single, bigger Natcon. Read more... )

Cause Education [May. 14th, 2009|05:18 pm]

[mood | quixotic]

This post has been brewing for a couple of years. It's not about any one of the many causes worth fighting for, it's not about or aimed at any one person, it hasn't been spurred on by any one event.

Abuse and accusations are not how you win people over to your way of thinking. Keeping your allies on the back-foot because you think they should know better does not help teach them how to better understand or present your side of an argument. Read more... )

The Monty Python Rule - a rant on the film Knowing [Apr. 29th, 2009|12:10 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]
[mood | pig-biting mad]

I have now seen it. I thought it was a good film, with an interesting concept/conceit - until the last ten minutes when it breaks the Monty Python rule.

There's a rule of comedy that I heard many years ago, attributed to the boys from Monty Python - If you have four men standing in dustbins talking, you don't need to explain it. The audience will accept it. But if someone then walks on in a business suit, you need an some sort of explanation. - It's a rule I think works equally well for any bit of writing.

Rant on Knowing that will contain massive spoilers for the end of the movie - Oh, and there's a fair bit of swearing - you have been warned... )

Bushfires [Feb. 11th, 2009|10:37 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | thoughtful]

Had to pop by the shops today and while I was there I bought two tins of canned soup to drop in the big bushfire relief box at the front of my local Supabarn. Made sure I picked ones that opened with ringpulls, because I'm not sure there will be an excess of can openers available. It was only $4 to do, we can afford that, and it's two small quick simple meals.

On the next shopping run, we're buying nappies and baby food to send down. It's a little more costly, but hey, we haven't lost everything, we can afford it.

Also going to be going through Lex's old clothes, and some of his toys, and sending some of those down. And I'm thinking of talking to my accountant about whether a business running at the low level mine runs at, can afford to send a bunch of toys down. Yes there are more important things that people need, but when everything is gone, it's nice if your child at least has a toy to play with.

I'm also moving forward my plan to sort through my clothes. The good ones can be sent down.

Main reason I'm writing this is to get people thinking about what they can do.

But the best thing I'd seen yet on the bushfires comes from Chris Lawson.

US Election [Nov. 5th, 2008|01:22 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | worried]

These days I'm lucky if I get to skim LJ, and so may have missed other people who have the same concern I do. I think many of my friends want Obama to win, for all sorts of good reasons. Things are looking good, with many big Republicans even publically supporting him.

But while everyone seems to be hoping for an Obama victory, I have yet to hear anyone express the niggling fear I've had since day one - the bastards stole one election and got clean away with it, who is to say they won't do it again?

I need help! [Oct. 8th, 2008|12:37 am]
[Tags|, , , , , ]
[mood | curious]

No, not that sort of help, you bastards! I'm stuck. Genuinely stuck.

You see, just after Lex was born, we looked at his birth certificate and Sharon asked, "What are you going to put down for yourself as 'Occupation?'"

Without pause, and in a tone of voice that implied that it was a weird question, I replied, "Drover."

Then realised what I'd said. I haven't been a drover for over 15 years, but it's still so tied up in my identity that it's who I feel I am. So then I started thinking about it.

What is my occupation?

Strictly speaking I run a small business, but that's not who I am except from the perspective of wanting other people to be able to get this stuff too. It's what I do to stay sane given I've yet to defeat my inability to write fiction since the stroke.

I can fit into a box, but there'll be a lot of me sticking out the cracks and over-flowing the top.

One of my running gags has been that I should just put down Work of Art, because my life is my canvas and I just keep playing with it. You know, Bastard in the phone book, Danger as a middle name, always playing to the crowd, even when they aren't there...

Some may say 'This is Lex's Birth Certificate, he won't thank you for putting something silly on there,' and they may be right. But you know, every time I look at my birth certificate and see under occupation for my dad 'Slaughterman/Drover' it brings a palpable sense of who my father really was back to me.

And I'd kind of like Lex to have the same thing...

And let's face it, if he has my sensibilities, there's not much I could put down that would bother him.

So I've done a poll. I may not go with what people say, but it may help me figure out what I'm going to put down... So vote away! Poll below cut... )

Con-Running [Sep. 2nd, 2008|11:50 am]

[mood | contemplative]

A friend posted up a piece on programming for conventions - I wanted to add some more general con-running thoughts and ideas.

These are based on things I've seen and done, stories I've heard, mistakes I've made and seen made by others. It's not aimed at any one person or convention, though it can't help but relate to many...Read more... )
