Goodbye Caine [Jun. 5th, 2009|10:23 am]

[mood |sad]

I've always had a soft spot for the Carradine family of actors, and enjoyed each of them in their various roles. Like many others though, David was a particular favourite, and his passing is keenly felt.

Farewell David, I hope you can rest easy.

Movie goodness [Mar. 13th, 2009|05:33 pm]

[mood | impressed]
[music |The Omega Man Soundtrack by Ron Grainer]

In the last week or so, between getting ready for the rent inspection, looking after Lex, and not much else, I have been thoroughly enjoying two different movie related shows. Actually, not enjoying - mainlining. Inhaling.

Both are by non-professionals

The first is Terry Frost's Paleo Cinema, a fairly regular podcast on movies pre-dating 1980. Terry's range of tastes and knowledge is fairly eclectic and encyclopedic, though as he is the first to admit, he's no expert. Terry forewent a formal study of cinema, and instead simply grew up watching lots of films.

His shows are usually well put together and presented, and it tends to feel like you're sitting around chatting with him, rather than being talked at. I don't always agree with his views and criticisms, but there hasn't been a single show I haven't enjoyed.

I checked out a couple of random podcasts, but have now gone back to the start and am running through the shows in order. Highly recommend it.

The other is The Bazura Project, a movie show that screens on Channel 31. Shannon Marinko and Lee Zachariah present a half-hour program of news, reviews, interviews, entertainment and general silliness. Every show opens with a short parody of a well-known film (there's only been one I haven't picked so far).

My attention was first drawn to the Bazura Project by this report on Media Watch about their efforts to get nominated for a Logie.

All three seasons are watchable on their website, and on youtube. I started from the first episode and I'm now nearing the end of season two.

What I enjoy about both shows are that they are simply people who love movies talking to you about them. It's rare I come away from either without wanting to check out something new, or rewatch something old.

Check'em out!

After I drop Sharon at the airport on Sunday, I get to spend a couple of days driving back to Canberra with [info]gutter_monkey. We have no plans, beyond trying to check-out disused rail lines, and we may change that to something else.

I think you should all be jealous.

* I made banana and walnut muffins today, and they were yummy. I gave half to Bill and Diane from the Post Office, because they are lovely people and I didn't manage a Chrissy prezzie for them last year.

* Our estate agent has put back our rent inspection a month at my request. Basically told her we were in the middle of sorting/rearranging, and the house would be a mess.

Cut for extreme length, and because there's nothing overly exciting... )

100 Days of Love and Hate - Day 71 [Jan. 29th, 2009|01:14 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | happy]

Only 15 months since the last post! Woohoo! Given that I found myself having a harder and harder time reading and writing over that period, I'm happy to forgive myself.

Most Love and Hate posts tended to take around four hours of pretty solid work to get to a point where, if I wasn't entirely happy with it's wording, I wasn't unhappy with it being seen. And I just don't generally have the mental energy to throw around like that. And if I do, well, I can be playing with my son, or trying to get back into writing fiction.

I wanted to try and get a few more under my belt before posting again, but what the hell.

Weekend [Jan. 26th, 2009|11:22 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | exhausted]

Took a short trip with Sharon and Lex on the weekend, and wandered up to visit Lewis, Marylin, Nick, and Adrian in the Blue Mountains.

Had a lovely time catching up with good friends, though I slept a hell of a lot once I got there. Think I've finally crashed after my super-busy day a couple of weeks back, either that or it was my very busy pre-trip Friday wot did me in. Certainly I'm still struggling today and about to go back to bed.

Have to say though, the GPS is fabulous for exploring! On the way back I set it for the fastest route home (that didn't use the tollways) and we went from the Blue mountains to Goulburn, using only smaller roads and routes, no highways, and going through little towns like Oberon and Taralga. I always love driving new roads, each one is an fresh adventure. I really liked Taralga and want to swing back for a proper visit. And there was a some gorgeous scenery on the way back, too.

Best thing, in total taking the back roads rather than the highway and tollway only took us a quarter hour longer! For a much more beautiful trip! Would like to have taken photos, but stopping the car teands to mean Lex will wake, then need to feed, then need a change, and so an hour is lost. So if I'm going to stop, it needs to be pretty spectacular. Instead what i do now is put together a list of places I want to revisit.

Oh dear, more trips, how sad :)

[mood | sad]

Bob May, the Robot from Lost in Space is dead, as is Tony Hart, the artist/tv presenter who gave us Morph.

In years to come, older fans will talk about Black January, when so many old childhood favourites died. I mean, they're all old, death is not unexpected, but so many is such a short space!

Hey universe! I think four in one month is more than enough, okay? What about giving us February off?

Dreams [Nov. 3rd, 2008|04:10 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | thoughtful]

The last three to four months have been different for me, dream-wise. I rarely ever remember my dreams, but over the previous few months, I've remembered quite a few, and all bar one have been sexual in nature.

Remembering dreams = unusual.
Remembering sex dreams = like hens teeth.

Rarely a week has gone by without at least one. What has been especially interesting is that each dream has involved someone different. It's like my subconscious has reacted to the lack of orgasms in my life by working it's way through my friends. The exceptions have been notable only in that few of them are the people I'd really like to sleep with. Not to say some of the others aren't in the phwoar category.

The one non-sex dream I had? I was in Broken Hill and dreamed that just before leaving on the trip I'd seen a brief mention on LJ (which I hadn't even really been skimming since Lex came along) that suggested the possibility that [info]harveystoat might have died.

I spent a chunk of the day going through LJ and Facebook looking for any mention to establish what I was sure of - that John was still alive. Took a while, but found something just before I was going to be forced to ring him.

Dude, you so need to post more often!

Last note on the weekend visit [Oct. 8th, 2008|09:18 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | chipper]

We will be in Melbourne this weekend, staying at Sharon's dad's place. Details are in a previous post.

We're just about to leave for Bateman's Bay, and the car is packed. I have one request of anyone we end up seeing while in town.

No presents. Please.

The car is packed to the rafters. Any gifts, even little bits of clothing, will have me scratching my head trying to figure where to put it. Your presence will be enough.

Cheers!

Come and see our sprog! [Oct. 6th, 2008|10:34 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

Barring disasters, Sharon, Lex, and I should be in Melbourne from sometime Friday. We might make it to the MSFC but it's not super likely.

However, we will be staying in Noble Park, at Sharon's dad's place. And we figure if we've driven 650+km with an infant, you buggers can bloody travel the last 20! :-)

You'll be able to catch us there until about 3pm on Sat 11th, and we'll be there all day Sunday. After that we leave for Cohuna on Monday or Tuesday (or Wednesday if we're feeling tired). So if you don't catch us on the weekend, you might catch us after that, but don't count on it.

Gender issues [Sep. 2nd, 2008|06:29 pm]

[mood | mischievous]

We've been out and about a couple of times in the last two days, which has knocked the stuffing out of both of us. Many people have commented on our baby, and when they hear he's a boy, they all talk about what a good-looking or handsome child he is.

I'm thinking of introducing him to strangers as a girl now and again, just to see what they say.

Once I'm bored with that, I may start saying he's a hermaphrodite.

Sharon and Lex update [Aug. 23rd, 2008|09:02 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | cheerful]

Shaz was in labour for around 26 1/2 hours. She spent probably 25 1/2 of it in only moderate discomfort even though she used no major pain relief. She would have a contraction, pull a face, and keep going. She continued chatting happily through all of it, punctuated with the occasional, "ow." She literally sang through some of the later contractions. It only got hard on her when she got tired due to getting chilled in the bath. Then she had two Panadeine Forte, snoozed for a couple of hours, and came back rechanged and fairly cheery.

During one quite bad contraction, she broke into a Carmen Miranda song.

I couldn't make this up if I tried.

Right at the end, she had some gas. She moaned a bit during the final contractions to get Lex out, and had a hard time explaining to the midwife that in fact, she wasn't getting any of the natural signals to push. Sharon doesn't know her own body, because it didn't come with a manual, and she's crap at exploring or understanding her own physical being. Once the midwife understood this, she just told Sharon when to push and when to stop.

Lex plopped out of her and immediately let it be known that he had my lungs. We're still calling him Lex, but aren't sure yet whether that will be his name. Have to wait and see if he is a Lex.

Lex is 51cm long (20 inches), weighs 3.77kg (8 pounds, 5 ounces), has long, sharp fingernails, a giant boofhead, and looks like Winston Churchill. He was born at 10:38am on Sat 23rd August. [info]mireille21 won the sweep, being only 4 minutes out. Once the chocolate cigars arrive, I'll send one out. I hope they don't suck.

Mother and baby are doing great. So far I have been able to calm him down within a few minutes every time he starts to cry. I'm rather proud of this. I also don't expect it to last. Lex fed without too much hassle, was happy to sleep on my chest at one point, and in my lap later for an hour and a half while Sharon caught up on her sleep.

I'm about to go and catch up on my sleep.

Shaz needed some internal stitches, and was naturally rather tired, but is fine and cheerful. When I left the hospital, they were asking if she needed any pain relief. She paused, took careful stock of how she was feeling, and said no.

Godparents [Aug. 22nd, 2008|11:48 am]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | contemplative]

Sharon and I have been thinking about Godparents. It's kind of hard. In the old days, Godparents were to look after the religious education of the child and took over care in the event it was orphaned. While we have no need for religious education as such, picking people who would be good mentors for bub is difficult.

That's one of the problems with being in fandom, there's a lot of good people who we feel close to and who have a wide range of skills and knowledge. One of the advantages is that those people will play a part in Lex's life anyway.Read more... )
