Merry Newtonmas! Hope you all have an awesome holiday season.
In other news, I think I want to do this for my decorations next year. |

| Blah... Yay! |
[Dec. 24th, 2009|10:07 am] |
Over the last few days I've been gradually feeling slightly sicker every day. It's slightly annoying, especially as I'm feelin' particularly RS today, and I'm going to be Santa-ing tonight and tomorrow.
Mind you... gunna love playing Father Christmas no matter how sick I feel. May even wander the neighbourhood in costume tonight after I get back, depending on how the heat has hit me.
Mind you, even though I feel blah, the video below is made of awesome and has cheered me right up. I think it's the joyous laughter at the end :)

[May. 25th, 2009|12:30 pm] |
You know what's great? Continuum 5 is coming up, August 14th-16th, Melbourne. If you're not there, you'll be missing out.
What's cool is, this Saturday the 30th, C5 is having a Trivia Quiz. ( Poster with details below the cut )
The awesome thing is that Continuum 6 is already being planned for next year. That's right, it's on baby!
And the amazing thing? People are already starting to make plans for Continuum 7! |

Just some extra things I forgot to mention...
* While seated and holding Lex in the kitchen the other week, he head-butted me, driving my head back into the wall. *Whack* *Thud* "Nice one, Lex," I said, prompting him to do it twice more in rapid succession. *Whack* *Thud* *Whackthud!*
* Lex is now shit scared of my dalek.
* hehehehehe...
* Lex only started to properly crawl a week or so back. Within a couple of days of nailing crawling, he started to pull himself up to standing using things like the couch. A day after that, he started trying to actually climb up onto things like the couch. Too fast!
* Tomorrow night at 7:30 on SBS is the Botswana episode of Top Gear. If you've never seen the show, or have seen an episode but didn't like it, try this one. This is the one that turned Sharon into a fan. I've been married to her for over a decade, and I have literally never seen her laugh so hard for so long. She was in real pain by the end. Basically, if this episode doesn't get you in, Top Gear will never be a show you'd enjoy.
* She's sitting beside me and giggling now, just thinking about it.
* I have decided that at some point, within the next few years, I will have to get a theremin.
* Continuum 5 seems to be shaping up well. We're going, who else is?
* Lex also gets to listen to Uncle Terry on PaleoCinema fairly regularly.
( * Four Lex pictures below the cut... ) |

| Movie goodness |
[Mar. 13th, 2009|05:33 pm] |
In the last week or so, between getting ready for the rent inspection, looking after Lex, and not much else, I have been thoroughly enjoying two different movie related shows. Actually, not enjoying - mainlining. Inhaling.
Both are by non-professionals
The first is Terry Frost's Paleo Cinema, a fairly regular podcast on movies pre-dating 1980. Terry's range of tastes and knowledge is fairly eclectic and encyclopedic, though as he is the first to admit, he's no expert. Terry forewent a formal study of cinema, and instead simply grew up watching lots of films.
His shows are usually well put together and presented, and it tends to feel like you're sitting around chatting with him, rather than being talked at. I don't always agree with his views and criticisms, but there hasn't been a single show I haven't enjoyed.
I checked out a couple of random podcasts, but have now gone back to the start and am running through the shows in order. Highly recommend it.
The other is The Bazura Project, a movie show that screens on Channel 31. Shannon Marinko and Lee Zachariah present a half-hour program of news, reviews, interviews, entertainment and general silliness. Every show opens with a short parody of a well-known film (there's only been one I haven't picked so far).
My attention was first drawn to the Bazura Project by this report on Media Watch about their efforts to get nominated for a Logie.
All three seasons are watchable on their website, and on youtube. I started from the first episode and I'm now nearing the end of season two.
What I enjoy about both shows are that they are simply people who love movies talking to you about them. It's rare I come away from either without wanting to check out something new, or rewatch something old.
Check'em out! |

| Bushfires |
[Feb. 11th, 2009|10:37 pm] |
Had to pop by the shops today and while I was there I bought two tins of canned soup to drop in the big bushfire relief box at the front of my local Supabarn. Made sure I picked ones that opened with ringpulls, because I'm not sure there will be an excess of can openers available. It was only $4 to do, we can afford that, and it's two small quick simple meals.
On the next shopping run, we're buying nappies and baby food to send down. It's a little more costly, but hey, we haven't lost everything, we can afford it.
Also going to be going through Lex's old clothes, and some of his toys, and sending some of those down. And I'm thinking of talking to my accountant about whether a business running at the low level mine runs at, can afford to send a bunch of toys down. Yes there are more important things that people need, but when everything is gone, it's nice if your child at least has a toy to play with.
I'm also moving forward my plan to sort through my clothes. The good ones can be sent down.
Main reason I'm writing this is to get people thinking about what they can do.
But the best thing I'd seen yet on the bushfires comes from Chris Lawson. |

| Trailers From Hell |
[Jan. 16th, 2009|10:52 pm] |
king_espresso, angriest, and robinpen take note, as well as anyone else with an interest in films.
Trailers From Hell features directors such as Joe Dante (Gremlins), Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), and John Landis (The Blues Brothers), giving commentaries on trailers for films that range between Ben Hur, The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T, and The Egg and I.
It's an awesome site. |

| Future Doctors |
[Jan. 4th, 2009|03:42 pm] |
By now most of you will have heard that Matt Smith is to be the 11th Doctor.
I trust Moffat and co. to have chosen carefully, but I am a little worried about the future if recent trends continue. At this rate, another fifteen years we'll have a foetus behind the console! |

| Programs |
[Aug. 9th, 2008|04:26 pm] |
Have finally gotten all the programs uploaded onto the PC. It seems fairly stable apart from not wanting to shut down properly some of the time, which is a huge improvement on the overall functionality. Time will tell how it lasts on a PC that caused on old priest to proclaim it as EVIL, moments before he burst into flames and died!
*ahem*
Anyway, just thought I'd put up links to a few of my favourite handy programs. Most of these have free versions. I'm not saying these are the best out there, these are just the ones I've found that I've liked and used for some time. Figure some of you will know about a few of these, but for those that don't, some are worth repeating... ( Read more... )
And that's it! Feel free to reply with your own fav programs, or to say 'nonono, that program is crappy compared to this one!' |

| Squiggle! |
[Mar. 29th, 2008|08:20 pm] |
I got confused as to when I'm leaving Perth and the dates, which means I can see Mr. Squiggle!
I've had the privilege of chatting to Norman Hetherington (Mr. Squiggle's long time friend) a few times, and seeing Mr. Squiggle himself live on a couple of occasions, and I never thought it would happen again.
9am Tuesday at the State Library of WA. It will kill me for the rest of the day, but I don't care even if I have to get a taxi there, it's Mr. Squiggle!
Will I be seeing anyone else there? |

| Healthy sex, and GO-1A |
[Nov. 27th, 2007|08:41 am] |
Why Should We Have Sex? 20 Good Healthy Reasons
And at the other end of things, a piece on the regulation GO-1A banning porn for soldiers. It's an interesting one, not because of the porn ban, what else does one expect from America (yes, go out and fight and maim and kill people, but don't look at naughty pictures!), but because of a side note about how under the same regulation servicemen are banned from keeping pets. More on that side of things here |
