| Conventions in 2010 |
[Oct. 26th, 2009|11:11 pm] |
So, we've looked at finances, holiday logistics, Lex logistics, and a bunch of other stuff, and have had to divvy up the convention going for next year. We've been nutting out ideas for a while, but Sharon's work commitments and our finances have meant we've had to firm up our plans. ( Read more... ) |

| Long Term Planning and Willing Souls |
[Aug. 7th, 2009|01:32 pm] |
The mid to late nineties was when I first had the base idea for the Continuum Conventions. I still have most of my notes from then, filed away where I can one day come across them and say, "So that's where they were!"
I've never thought as myself as a good person for running cons, or something like the Continuum Foundation for that matter. ( Read more... ) |

| Middleman on DVD |
[Jul. 30th, 2009|08:20 pm] |
The Middleman DVDs have just been released in the US. I know many of you out there are fans of the show, so I thought I'd let you know.
Given that the creator of Middleman is hopeful that with good enough DVD sales the series may come back in some form, if your DVD player can handle NTSC discs, you may wish to buy them ASAP. We just ordered ours through Amazon.com. Wanted to buy from Shout, the company doing the DVD release, but unfortunately they don't sell direct to Australia.
For those that don't know it, The Middleman is one of the shows I will be talking about on The Best TV Shows That Never Were panel at Continuum 5.

| Dot Points from the last couple of months |
[Jul. 25th, 2009|12:40 am] |
In the last week or so, I've had a small bunch of concerned friends contact me privately to ask if I was okay, as I haven't been posting much for a while. Everything's cool, I've just been balancing being busy with my limited mental/physical energy, and some things, like LJ, are tending to suffer.
Thank you for the thoughts! I have been wanting/trying to put stuff up, but just not finding the time. Now some quick dot points and a picture... ( Read more... ) |

Just some extra things I forgot to mention...
* While seated and holding Lex in the kitchen the other week, he head-butted me, driving my head back into the wall. *Whack* *Thud* "Nice one, Lex," I said, prompting him to do it twice more in rapid succession. *Whack* *Thud* *Whackthud!*
* Lex is now shit scared of my dalek.
* hehehehehe...
* Lex only started to properly crawl a week or so back. Within a couple of days of nailing crawling, he started to pull himself up to standing using things like the couch. A day after that, he started trying to actually climb up onto things like the couch. Too fast!
* Tomorrow night at 7:30 on SBS is the Botswana episode of Top Gear. If you've never seen the show, or have seen an episode but didn't like it, try this one. This is the one that turned Sharon into a fan. I've been married to her for over a decade, and I have literally never seen her laugh so hard for so long. She was in real pain by the end. Basically, if this episode doesn't get you in, Top Gear will never be a show you'd enjoy.
* She's sitting beside me and giggling now, just thinking about it.
* I have decided that at some point, within the next few years, I will have to get a theremin.
* Continuum 5 seems to be shaping up well. We're going, who else is?
* Lex also gets to listen to Uncle Terry on PaleoCinema fairly regularly.
( * Four Lex pictures below the cut... ) |

| Off to Melbourne. |
[Nov. 20th, 2008|03:12 pm] |
I leave later today to head for Melbourne so I can do a little businessy stuff, and more importantly attend Continuum Relit.
Taking a new route down, using the Monaro Highway. It'll mean I approach Melbourne from the East, the side of town where most of what I have to do is. It takes an extra 80 odd km, but on the other hand I don't have to cross town once I arrive. If I had more time I'd crash the night in Bombala on my way down and try to get photos of platypuseseseses in the morning. Oh well, another trip, maybe.
It's going to be a flying visit, one where I catch up with virtually no-one, which is how most of my future business-type trips to Melbourne will be. Being the home dad, I have to be back in time to look after Lex again on Monday. For this trip, since I had to get to town during business hours on a weekday to do a chunk of what I needed to do, Sharon has taken an RDO for tomorrow. She and the boy aren't coming with me, which is sad, but on the other hand I will have room in the car for non-baby stuff!
Hopefully I'll see some of you at Relit. No need to RSVP any more, that was just so we had approximate numbers for the food (a range from carnivore to vegan appetites). Free nibbles, socialising, drinks, an announcement or two, and the very scrumptious Continuum 5 committee will be there too... how can you resist? |

| Be warned... (phone post) |
[Apr. 21st, 2008|01:21 am] |
Let me make this as clear as possible - the next person who says to me, in a matter-of-fact tone, that Continuum can't run a convention in 2010 because of the WorldCon, I will skin. I will then tan the hide, and wear it as a warning to others.
Given that the Worldcon in '99 knocked out Melbourne fandom for two years either side of its running, I should think it's even more important that we continue to operate. |

| ConFound |
[Apr. 3rd, 2008|12:09 pm] |
This weekend I will be wearing my Continuum Foundation hat as I talk to a group of people who are running a major event in Melbourne this year. It's not actually a science fiction convention as such, but they are a fannish community of their own, and they came to us wanting advice.
The Continuum Foundation is all about encouraging fandom(s) and helping where we can. Our primary goals are to help new people find fandom, and training up the next generation of con-runners through the Continuum Conventions.
Continuum 5 is coming, by the way - 2009 - so start saving now!
One of the things I say is that if ConFound isn't doing what it can to help out, then what's the point? ( Read more... ) |
