New Bond Song [Nov. 8th, 2008|06:50 pm]

angriest commented in this post that the new Bond song for Quantum of Solace is pretty bloody awful. I've just heard it, and must agree.

The silly thing is, just before hearing it, I got to see this one on YouTube. Okay it's a comedy take on a Bond theme and the new films, but it actually sounds way more like a Bond song than we've been given.

I can't help but think about when I first heard Madonna was doing the song for Die Another Day, I was over the moon. She has a good strong sassy voice, the kind I associate with a good Bond song. And then they messed with her voice and gave us a good song, but a crap Bond song.

I love most of the early Bond songs, they have that big, sexy, dark sound to them. For the record, my personal "recent" favourite is "World is Not Enough" by Garbage.

No point to this post, just thinking aloud...

Hang on, posts are supposed to have a *point*?

Well, for me, I'm generally making some sort of point, even if it's not obvious.

Bring back Shirley Bassey... or Tom Jones or even Matt Munro... nah he's dead. Anyone but A-Ha! or Paul McCartney. Fortunately, from the reviews, the song is the only bad bit of QoS.

Actually I like "Live and Let Die," at least it had some balls.

I think if you're going to choose someone for a Bond song, they need to have already had a career verging on a decade, or the right sound, preferably both.

Four words fit those criteria. Supreme Beings Of Leisure.

Try "Touch Me" on their myspace page. Great 007 stylings.

Sorry to disagree, but of the five songs there, I think "Touch Me" is the weakest of the possible Bond themes - bit too disco. But certainly "Never the Same" and "Calamity Jane" are getting there, I'd just like them sung a little ballsier.

I've just heard Johnny Cash's submission for the Thunderball theme - it's a bit 'John Wayne is James Bond,' but the lyrics relate to the film much more directly than the Tom Jones version.

If you can find Shirley Bassey's vocal version of Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (which wasn't used in Thunderball), that kicks serious arse, too.

He's tall and he's dark
And like a shark, he looks for trouble
That's why the zero's double
Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

He's suave and he's smooth
And he can soothe you like vanilla
The gentleman's a killer
Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

Damoiselles and danger
Have filled the stranger's past
Like a knife he cuts thro' life
Like ev'ry day's the last

He's fast and he's cool
He's from the school that loves and leaves 'em
A pity if it grieves 'em
Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's not a fool

Oh, damoiselles and danger
Have filled the stranger's past
Like the knife he cuts thro' life
Like ev'ry day's the last

He's fast and he's cool
He's from the school that loves and leaves 'em
A pity if it grieves 'em
Mr. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang's not a fool
No, he's no fool
He's no fool
He is no fool

It's a pity, I actually like both of the artists separately, but that song is an abomination.

The only sensible option for a Daniel Craig-era Bond theme is Muse. Melody-driven, British and imcomparably kickass.
